Gadsby's Tavern is located in Alexandria, Virginia. Consisting of two buildings; a tavern dating back to 1785 and a hotel back to 1792- it is a charming location for an intimate dinner date or family supper.
John Gadsby leased and operated these original buildings between 1796 and 1808. This was establishment was originally a central gathering place for locals in the Alexandria area- and was known for its political and social environment.
Dance, theater, and musical performances besides meetings all took place in this historic location. The ballroom was also utilized for parties and was visited by the presidents of the United States at certain times. Some of the tavern's frequent patrons were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison and James Monroe.
The building is now home to a restaurant and a ballroom- the serving staff wears authentic period clothing and the menu reflects the early American faire. There is a museum on site as well besides the occasional events they offer as well that is further entertainment for visitors.
